Go to a festival – Summer checklist #11

It’s hot. It’s really hot out. And hot weather + 4th of July weekend means, it’s time for the Naperville Ribfest. This is one of our family’s favorite festivals because the food is yummy and the family area is full of fun activities that are all free! Bouncy houses? Free. Face painting? Free. Games? Free.

So, we went and I had some yummy pulled pork. (I actually don’t really like ribs but I always have great luck finding some delicious pulled pork.) The girls love getting corn on the cob – and this year it was positively dripping in butter. We finished our lunch with some shaved ice. Yum!

Cat Owner Level: Expert

When I was younger, I had cat furniture for my cat. It was one of those houses that doubles as a scratching post. Really nice and cozy and functional….until the cat gets fleas. And, there is no way to completely rid those things of fleas because they can’t go in the wash. After that, I stayed away from pet furniture. Scratching posts or things like that were fine because they didn’t have a lot of fabric for fleas or other critters to attach to. But, I figured it was never a necessity because cats love sleeping in boxes, or shoes, or blankets, or laundry so they don’t really need purchased stuff.

That all changed recently. I had some store credit to use and I usually don’t hold onto store credit or gift cards for too long……There wasn’t a lot that I was interested in for myself…..or the girls…..or Ryan……but, I found a cat tent. Yep. A cat tent.

I told myself that it was ok because 1) it was able to go in the laundry if needed and 2) it was the perfect size for the girls to use with their dolls if the cat didn’t take to it.

Behold! The glory of a super content cat hanging out in her new tent!

Now, would I have purchased this if I didn’t have a store credit that needed to be used in that particular store? Um. No. But, I will go ahead and say that it is a pretty good purchase.

I think that Buddy would agree.

Lego my legos

We are now at a new level of parenting. There are now toys in our house that everyone wants to play with. Kids. Mom. Dad. Yep. Legos have officially taken over our living room. We have had lots of Duplos in the house but now we have a good mix of Duplos and Legos. We are now at a point in which Ryan and I are dreaming ahead to when we can buy more complex sets and all have some building fun…….(Also, when there aren’t Legos all over the floor, chances are really good that we are in the middle of watching Lego Movie.)

So…..I know what sets I wanna buy……not sure if the girls will be as into these ones though……

Guilty Pleasures

Carbs. Carbs. More carbs. I know that I don’t need a giant bowl of carbs….but sometimes…..you just need a big pile of carbs, right?

My newest guilty pleasure…..waffle fries from Spud Heads with the Guns’ n Rosemary topping. I mean. Seriously.

Because sometimes when you’re spending way more time at the mall than you had planned on….and sometimes when you’re kids are going insane because they are tired/hungry/hangry…..and sometimes when you are getting frustrated because you just need to buy some shoes but can’t seem to find what you want…..sometimes you need a bowl of fries covered in yumminess.

What is your guilty (or not-so-guilty) pleasure food? Carbs? Chocolate? Carbs and chocolate?

Big Steps in Parenthood

Last weekend, I experienced two new exciting steps on my journey through parenthood. First, I am beginning to feel like a real dance mom because I purchased a bun maker and, gee whiz, this thing actually really works! I had been struggling and getting frustrated trying to get big girl’s hair to stay in a bun. Her dance recital is coming up and she has to have it in a bun this year. Well, bun maker to the rescue! I bought mine at Target but I know that you can find then in other stores (in the hair accessory section).

This looks pretty darn good if I do say so myself. And this is before pinning any of it so it’ll look even better on recital day.

Second big step? Apparently, big girl and I are now at the stage in which I can give her one of my least favorite chores (sorting socks) and she’ll take care of it without any guidance. Now, I love doing laundry. I love fresh laundry. I love the smell of clean clothes. But, I hate sorting socks. I have been known to put away several loads of laundry and leave all of the socks in the laundry basket. But…….

The sock pairs aren’t stuck together at this point but at least they are sorted together. Important to note, this picture was taken right before little girl picked up all of the socks and put them back in the laundry basket thus undoing all of her big sister’s work.  But. Still. It’s a big step.

My little girls are growing up so quickly. But at least that means that I don’t have to sort socks anymore.

Fall Running is the Best Running

I know I’m not the only one who believes that running in the fall is the best. It’s the time of year when I actually “enjoy” running. (Ok. I’m never going to be a person who loves running. I love the after of running, not the during. But, it’s better in the fall.) I find that on longer runs, I get bored really easily. This was a real problem during the half-marathon. But, there is so much to look at during the fall that keeps me a bit more focused. Beautiful leaves. Cooling winds. Yep. So much better than being a sweaty  mess during the summer. 🙂

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve already seen these pictures. (So, sorry.) But, going for a fall run among the trees is just so incredibly peaceful! Even if you are surrounded by 100s of other runners during a 5k. 🙂

Follow Me….

So, I’m on Instagram now. I’m still fairly new at it and I’m figuring it out as I go. Currently, I’m using it as an extension to my blogging. So, if you find what I write here to be somewhat interesting, you might find the pictures that I post to be somewhat interesting, too.
