Changing Up the Routine

It’s snowing. It’s actually snowing again. I, along with many in the Midwest, am just so done with winter. Come on spring! Let’s get going!

However, in the meantime, it’s time to get back into the workout routine. I took some time off after the the RunDisney Princess Half-Marathon weekend………

19.3 miles in two days…..well, that’s the most that I have ever done in that amount of time. So, taking a rest was definitely ok with me.

My left foot was very sore in the days/weeks following the race weekend, so I’ve been taking it easy to let the (self-diagnosed) plantar fasciitis heal properly. No running. Lots of stretching. And lots of massaging with golf balls – rolling my foot over a golf ball really worked well to give a deep massage on the arch and heel of the foot!  – I am not a doctor and in most situations have no idea what I’m doing…..so please do not take that as medical advice. It’s just something that worked for me.

Since I am not currently training for something in particular, I am going to be changing up my workouts a bit more. Yes, I’ll hit the treadmill during the week and run outside on the weekends (as long as it’s not snowing……..) but I’m also planning on adding in some classes. I’ve never actually taken a workout class. So, it’s a bit nerve wracking to even think about. But, Yorktown Mall in Lombard (hey suburbanites!) has a really great deal right now where you can try out two classes at each of their fitness studios for free! You can find info about the program here.

So, who wants to look ridiculous with me in a class? Come join me!

Running Fuel

I learned that my beloved Fleet Feet no longer carries the energy jelly beans that I used during my first and only half-marathon. (Apparently, they haven’t carried it for awhile….) Now that I am getting closer to the date for my next *gulp* half-marathon, I need to find another product. So, a quick trip to Fleet Feet and I have four items to test out. Well, specifically two items, two flavors of each.

I will be testing out each one before my long runs leading up to race day until I find the one that works best for me…..

But, I want to know….if you are use one of these products (or if you swear by another product) which one do you use? Does one work really well for you?  Let me know!

Kick Starting 2017

A few months ago, my treadmill died…..and then grad school happened……and then the weather turned colder. All of these added up to me completely stopping my training. *sigh* So, after some important conversations and a visit to a local gym, we made the decision to buy a second (and much higher quality) treadmill. Important reason #1: this one is covered by a warranty for several years so if the motor dies on it, it can be fixed. Important reason #2: although a gym membership is enticing, any gym that we go to would be required to have child care on site because I would have to bring the girls. Important reason #3: the convenience factor of having a treadmill in our house so I don’t have to go outside (in weather) is pretty high.

So, here’s my new friend. I’m looking forward to working with her so that I can keep up with my training. Goal? I want to be able to register for any 5K or 10K that I want to without having to worry about whether or not I’ll be ready. And…..I am planning on doing the Glass Slipper Challenge in 2018. Run Disney, here I come!

Half Marathon – DONE!

(Once again, this had been sitting in my drafts folder…..this school year…..gee whiz…. Hopefully, I’ll get back on track with my blogging in the next coming weeks….hopefully…..)

It’s hard to believe that a year ago, I was prepping for my first 5K. And a month ago, I completed my first half-marathon!

It was not easy and there were a couple times in which I thought of giving up but I pushed through and completed it.

One of the best parts was that the run was just beautiful!

I did it!

It’s official. I’m a runner. I finished my first 10K! It was an amazing weekend filled with great food (it was at Disney after all.)

12747429_10207926829829482_3887288367225104056_oThis was my first Disney race but as soon as I saw that 5 mile marker I was already hooked. It had been a great experience up through that point. There were characters at every mile and that was fun to see. I didn’t actually stop, though, until after the 5 mile mark because I knew that once I made it that far, I was almost done.

My official time: 1:30:35  Not bad for my first 10K.

Unfortunately, they are crazy expensive so it’ll be awhile before I can do another one. But, I’ll definitely be back for another run. In the meantime, this week, I started training for a half marathon.

My New Best Friend

So, my lovely readers, you already know that I am training for a 10K. You can check out my fundraising page here. Well, the 10K is in Florida. Which is great because it’s in February and a February 10K would only be doable (for me) if it was somewhere warm. The downside? I don’t live in Florida.

I was very concerned about how I would keep up with my training. One of the first cold-ish days in October, I went for a morning run. Let me just say, it was awful. Just awful. I’m guessing that once I’ve done more training, my lungs be a bit more prepared for…um…October. But I needed to continue my training without it being, well, awful.

So, here’s my new best running friend. Yep. A treadmill. It’s definitely not a fancy one but it does the job that it needs to do. And it folds up so it’s out of the way. It was also a lot cheaper than trying to get a gym membership.

Once spring has returned, I can get back into running outside. But for now, it’s nice to be able to keep up with my training without setting a foot outside. 🙂
